We have several new projects on the go focusing on practical house renovation ideas and modern home extensions. The projects are all in the initial design stage and include a ground floor house renovation and extension in Elie, a timber clad extension of an artist’s cottage in Pittenweem and a whole house renovation of a ‘very big’ 80’s bungalow near Cupar. Below is a short description of each project along with a selection of the proposed house floor plans and renderings to give you a taste of what we’ve been up to over the past few weeks.
House Renovation & Extension in Elie
A joint desire to increase living space and future proof their home for later years is the main focus of this project in Elie. The proposals include the addition of a new entrance porch, utility room, family bathroom, master bedroom and new family room beside an open plan kitchen that faces on to the rear garden. The existing kitchen and living spaces are being opened up to allow views and daylight to cut through the house. A new cedar clad extension wraps around the existing building and has a living green roof planted with wildflowers and sedum. The rear garden will house a decked seating area with raised planting beds for edible plants and a built-in barbecue creating a nice focal point for the garden. Feature white brick walls provide continuity of materials as well as helping to keep the interiors light and bright.
Timber Clad Extension in a Conservation Area
This old artist’s cottage in Pittenweem is located within the village’s conservation area and presented us with a challenge to add space and modern living while preserving the architectural character of the building and its neighbours. The cottage itself has lots of character but like many properties of this age, it was in need of extra space and key house renovation ideas to suit the client’s needs. Our proposals add two wooden clad extensions to the rear that act as natural extensions of the internal space while introducing modern but sympathetic materials to the site and adding a needed connection of the internal spaces to the garden. The largest extension will house a utility, vestibule and open plan kitchen, dining space overlooking the garden. The smaller extension adds a small sitting sun-room to the master bedroom with big glass wall looking over the lovely and spacious walled garden and neighbouring church steeple.
Full House Renovation
The third project we are sharing, is the complete refurbishment of a large house built in the 80’s. The house currently has an awkward layout with all the rooms arranged along a dark central core served by two narrow corridors. Our design proposal is to provide better circulation with an open plan kitchen, living, dining space at one end and a more spacious bedroom arrangement in the other more private end of the house. A new double height space will enable the introduction of a mezzanine positioned over a central utility pod, providing a secluded library space with a birds eye view of the main living area. The utility pod is positioned opposite the front door with direct access into the boot room providing a more practical entrance for the owners and their dogs. With windows on three sides the new living space will be flooded with light as well as enjoying views across the countryside.
