It’s been a busy start to the year for Fife Architects. We are thrilled to be working with some incredible properties and wonderful clients. Recently, we have secured planning permission for four exciting projects in the East Neuk of Fife: a new build replacing an existing garage, two substantial extensions, and a stunning stable conversion.

As with all our projects, we design and build with sustainability in mind and consideration for the surrounding environment. We ensure that properties integrate harmoniously with their surroundings while also featuring their unique designs.

New Build House, Pittenweem

We are excited to introduce our first project: a newly built house in the heart of Pittenweem. This proposed residence will be constructed on the grounds of an existing garage and will be prominently visible from the main road leading out of town. Located within the conservation area, the site is surrounded by early and Victorian listed buildings.
The house design draws heavily from Pittenweem’s traditional architecture while incorporating a few modern touches, allowing it to feel like a new home in a very traditional setting. From the project’s inception, we aimed for a stylish yet sympathetic design that expresses a modern interpretation of the traditional Pittenweem vernacular aesthetic while preserving architectural features that extend the character of the conservation area.
Proposed materials are traditional, featuring a mix of slate roof tiles, sandstone cladding, timber, and render. The house design aims to achieve close to Passive House Standards (non-certified), resulting in a highly insulated, very low-energy home with renewable energy systems and heat recovery.

Elevated Extensions, Balcurvie, Fife

Our second project features a refurbishment and extension in Balcurvie, comprising an elevated single-storey extension with an open-air sheltered area underneath. This project aims to enhance the existing dwelling through thermal upgrades, internal renovations, and the addition of a carefully designed three-wing extension that takes advantage of the plot’s natural slope.

The new addition creates a south-facing family outdoor space, providing shelter and maximizing the site’s potential. The extension will house open-plan living spaces, a new entrance hall, and a master bedroom with ensuite. Sustainability is a key focus of this project, reflected in the use of highly insulated timber panels for the extension. The design optimises solar gain and views while ensuring privacy and minimal visual impact on neighboring properties.
This thoughtful renovation balances modern living requirements with energy efficiency, creating a home that is both comfortable and environmentally conscious.

To align with contemporary environmental concerns, the extension will be constructed using highly insulated timber panels. Timber is a renewable material that not only has a lower carbon footprint than traditional construction materials but also sequesters carbon throughout its lifecycle.

Converted Stables Barn in Crail, East Neuk of Fife

This next project is a conversion of an existing steel stable building into a 3-bedroom home, complete with parking areas and garden space. The project aims to transform the current structure into a modern, energy-efficient residence while maintaining existing access arrangement, as well as current garden space and parking arrangements for Muirhead cottage. The proposals also largely maintains the existing paddock field next door which will continue to be used for equestrian purposes. The proposed design includes reusing the existing steel stable building, converting it into open-plan living spaces (kitchen, dining, and seating), a new entrance/hall, three bedrooms (one with ensuite), a family bathroom, and a utility room. The plan is to upgrade the existing structure thermally with high levels of natural hemp insulation, utilising solar gains from the south-facing elevation while maintaining privacy and minimising visual impact on neighbouring properties.

The existing structure will undergo significant improvements to enhance energy efficiency and aesthetics. All walls, roof, and floor will receive natural thermal insulation exceeding the baseline of current Scottish regulations, and new timber cladding will improve the structure’s external appearance. Internally, the spaces will be redesigned to offer a fresh and contemporary ambiance, aiming for functional and comfortable living areas suited to modern lifestyles.

Refurbishment and extension, St Andrews.

Last but not least, our refurbishment and extension project in St Andrews. The project seeks to enhance the existing dwelling through thermal upgrades, internal renovations, and the addition of a carefully designed single-storey extension and a new dormer extension. The extension and alterations will provide open-plan living spaces, a new entrance hall, an upper level sitting room, and new enlarged bedroom in the attic space.

The sustainable focus of the project will be reflected in the use of highly insulated timber panels for the extension and a sedum and wildflower flat roof. South Facing Glazing optimising solar gain and views, while ensuring privacy and minimal visual impact on neighbouring properties.
