“The couple’s self-build adventures commenced in August 2021 when the couple purchased a bungalow in the coastal town of Anstruther in Fife. “Covid made us realise we could live somewhere other than London,” David recalls. The couple had been thinking about retiring and while they loved the sea, had already discounted Cornwall or Devon as being too touristy. “We have friends who live in Cellardyke, and we’d been coming up here a couple of times a year for about 10 years; we thought why not buy a house by the sea?” Nik Hunter
“The light has been a revelation! We’ve been up at 5 am, because it’s so light, and the light is different here; it’s lovely. The other great thing is jumping over the wall and going for a swim.” Susanne.
“We wanted to give FermĂn a chance to design something with some scope, and that was what he wanted too. We didn’t push him, but he quickly realised what we liked.” Some of FermĂn’s suggestions included the overhang over the deck, the sheltered outdoor space outside the bedroom and the Crittal-esque windows. “So many new builds along the coast have balconies and they never get used because it’s too windy. As FermĂn lives locally, he was accustomed to the wind direction, and he knew precisely where to give us shelter.” David

A work in progress, one of our projects along the stunning east coast of Fife.
The aim was to reimagine the exciting sun room to the rear of the property and replace with a new-build extension to accommodate a seating area and covered patio. As well as some energy upgrades, such as a new air source heat pump and PV panels.
We’re looking forward to the final results.

Welcome Josh 👋🏼
Josh is joining us as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant and will be with us for the next year. He is currently studying at Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art.
Josh already has many achievements, he won the InterAct 2024 Project competition. This was a group project consisting of Architects, Civil Engineers and Quantity Surveyors. He is also working on his own research project about Fife’s Forgotten Ruins, which will hopefully be published one day.
We are lucky to have him as part of our team at Fife Architects.
