Schoolhouse Timber Extension and Renovation

‘The Old Schoolhouse’ in Cuparmuir is a former school building that the Client rebuilt from a ruinous state in 1992.

The project saw the creation of proposals of a pair of new rear timber extensions to the property to create a spacious and accessible master bedroom designed with principles of ‘ageing in place’ as a lifelong home for the family along with new dedicated utility space and reconfigured ground floor with new bright interiors by the talented Terian Tilson Interior Design & our wonderful client Judi Simpson who not only contributed greatly to the design, but also ‘project-managed’ the entire construction stage… and what an amazing job she did, Thank you Judi!

This stunning Timber Extension and Renovation project ​is nestled in the idyllic countryside of Fife, Scotland. Our team of skilled architects has breathed new life into a former Schoolhouse, transforming and updating the converted spaces.

The entrance hall and front porch have been elegantly expanded, creating a warm and welcoming space that leads to all the public areas of the house. The kitchen has been extended to include a separate family room, perfect for cosy nights in with loved ones. The rear Timber Extension, designed with full accessibility in mind, provides a private living area for the client’s mother, complete with independent garden access. 

The timber extension’s timber frames boast excellent insulation, and the natural Scottish larch vertical cladding and slate pitched roof provide an attractive finish, complementing the existing tiles.

The newly designed master bedroom is nothing short of a luxurious retreat, complete with an en-suite and a sitting area with views overlooking the garden. The clever use of space has allowed us to include a gas stove in the corner of the sitting area in the timber extension, perfect for a relaxing evening in. Additionally, we’ve incorporated a handy utility area and secondary sitting room, creating a multifunctional space that adapts to the family’s every need.

Upstairs, we’ve remodeled the mezzanine, making better use of the space and providing an extra bedroom for the family to grow.
