Oak Frame Extension and Renovation, Falkland

Fife Architects have completed an oak frame extension and comprehensive full house renovation to this beautiful category ‘B’ listed property within the Falkland Conservation Area. The focus of the brief was to enhance the circulation spaces at ground level while introducing as much natural light as possible to the otherwise dark interiors which dominated the space.

An all inclusive ‘holistic’ approach was also developed as part of the design intending to bridge the building’s current architectural sensibilities with current and future building standards requirements. This was achieved through key thermal improvements to the building’s envelope and an extensive and sympathetic upgrade of the windows replacing single glazed windows with identical double glazed units throughout. The installion of solar thermal and photovoltaic panels on the roof at the back of the house should provide the entirety of the client’s domestic energy and hot water requirements. The project also included an extensive green roof on top of the green oak frame extension to the rear of the property, sown with grasses and meadow flowers it will provide year round interest and is visible internally through the lantern roof and from the first floor bedroom.
