Charred Larch Extension, Fife
A Seamless Transition from Home to Garden Office to Outdoors.
This extension project was conceived as a simple dining and garden room that would strengthen the connection between home and garden, creating a fluid and inviting space for family life and everyday living.
The design was carefully developed to remain within a 3.5-metre footprint from the existing house, ensuring the new addition feels balanced and proportionate, while maintaining respect for the surrounding context.
The extension acts as a transitional threshold—drawing movement from the heart of the home, through the new space, and out toward the garden and a separate home office beyond.
Externally, the use of charred larch cladding gives the extension a striking, contemporary presence. The deep blackened timber, created through the traditional Japanese technique of shou sugi ban, not only adds texture and depth but also offers durability and low maintenance. This tactile material allows the new structure to sit confidently alongside the existing building while clearly expressing its modern identity.
The result is a warm, cohesive, and well-integrated living environment that delivers on the client’s desire for a timeless, design-led addition to their home.

The blue cladding was originally inspired by the natural shade for lichen on the roof, the exterior has aged wonderfully, its never needed repainting and proves that timber is a sustainable material option for exterior cladding.

A rather unique project for us has just received planning permission. We have designed a very site specific space with the clients vision to replace a deteriorating garage with an innovative sunken garage with a rooftop greenhouse.

We are excited to announce that plans are underway to create a Memorial Garden in St Monans, offering a place of remembrance and reflection to honour the 21 men lost at sea in the 1875 tragedy.
Fife Architects are working with St Monans Memorial committee, designing and overseeing the project.

2025 has flown by so far and our team have been working hard so we all took a well-earned break yesterday afternoon and caught the May Princess from Anstruther to the Isle of May and what a spectacular day we had! Perfect weather to enjoy this amazing island home to hundreds of thousands of beautiful seabirds including over 100,000 puffins. The Doocot
One of our projects from 2017 has been transformed into stunning holiday accommodation near Arncroach in the East Neuk. Although all aspects of our designs weren’t in the final development, we really admire the finished project.
We worked on designs for both The Lodge (sleeps 4) and The Doocot (Sleeps 2) both of which are available for holiday lets.
This initial designs explored options for the conversion and restoration of an existing disused Doocot. A new practical entrance that considers the existing barn door, utilising garage space and existing stone features and stairs. A new roof with roof-lights to maximise natural daylight, one large master bedroom with en-suite. A new living space and a new open plan kitchen / dining.
The accommodations is also surrounded by beautiful farmland and orchards, producing one of the coast most loved apple juice - 🍏 @eastneukorchards

In order to fit this new extension into the site as snugly as possible, and maximize garden and deck space, there is only one right angle in the new build. The new landscaping is taking shape. Great progress at this extension project by Fife Architects! One major element of this project was how to deal with a very old, very large sandstone retaining wall, located just behind the new extension. Options were considered and in the end, the decision was made to carefully remove the wall altogether however to keep all the beautiful stone on site to form a new rockery gently sloping up to the higher level of this spectacular site.
