Balbirnie Gate Lodge, Markinch

Nestled amidst the lush tranquility of Fife, this eco-friendly two-storey timber extension seamlessly harmonises with its existing setting.

The design is a marriage of tradition and modern aesthetics, with a living green roof that blends effortlessly into the landscape and surrounding trees. The exterior boasts the timeless elegance of stained Siberian Larch cladding with lots of glass for the perfect family room.

An elevated new principal bedroom gives a feeling of being perched among the treetops in the heart of nature and takes advantage of the surrounding countryside views.

The extensions feature a highly insulated timber frame adorned with dark-stained Siberian Larch vertical cladding (a mix of board-on-board and vertical cladding). A living green roof graces the flat sections, while the pitched roof extension is covered with natural slate tiles to match the existing roof.

Our thoughtful extension design minimises the loss of existing fabric and retains architectural elements. We ensured we carefully preserved the architectural features of the existing house as well as garden features and all existing trees.

Inside, a careful preservation of tradition – oak trims extending from the original house into the extension and exposed original stone that accentuates the original cottage’s timeless beauty. We might have to do a few posts on this one to capture all the different spaces!
